San Donato Val di Comino
{mosimage}
San Donato Val di Comino is certainly one of the most impressive towns situated on the Latium slope of the  National Park of Abruzzo. San Donato contests with Alvito in being identified as the site of ancient Cominium (the Samnite fortress town, razed to the ground by Romans in 293 and 291 BC), which highlights how much the histories of  the two towns  are  intertwinned and often confused. The town is characterized with stepways and steep narrow streets, which open out into a charming little square dominated by gracious churches, of which we recall: the Sanctuary of St. Donato, restored and rearranged several times- of its ancient structure three naves still remain-; the Duomo of St. Marcello, with its basilical plan, has been the principal church of San Donato since 1630.

The oldest area of the town is distinguished  by a powerful square tower belonging to its fortress, the only element which has resisted the ravages of time amongst the remains of medieval walls erected by the counts of Aquino. Handicraft is still alive, and particularly widespread is the activity of stone chiselling. San Donato Val di Comino, with its magnificent and enviable position in a verdant environ, is only a few kms from the splendours of the National Park of Abruzzo. The town is an ideal base for excursions, mountain hikes and drives through a natural, protected and safeguarded environment  to be enjoyed throughout the year.
